what is a lead magnet

What Is A Lead Magnet?

No longer do those generic “Subscribe to Our Newsletter” boxes work. Email is personal! Readers want value in exchange for their email so that is where your awesome Lead Magnet comes in!

The lead magnet is a marketing term for a free piece of content that incentivizes your audience to take an action!

A good lead magnet solves a problem for your audience, offering value that will keep them coming back to you for more!

Most of the time, these babies are used to capture email subscribers. As a result, this leads to future sales, a more engaged audience, and the comfort of having your own audience without relying on another platform.

The lead magnet is an important piece to multiple puzzles. It can serve well in a sales funnel and it can also help you capture leads for future sales, connections, and it WILL grow your audience!

What’s the Point in Giving Away My Valuable Content For FREE?

When you offer something of value for free, it shows your audience you care about their success.

Plus, when you think about it, readers are paying you one way or another. At least with their email address and hopefully a product or service in the future.

Your lead magnet is a small bit of work now for a big payoff later!

Just make sure you don’t offer up too much strategy. You want to save the nitty gritty details for those paid products that this lead magnet is leading your reader towards.

Lead Magnet Examples

eBook

First, let’s make sure you know that I am not talking about a full-length novel here. Although that would be very kind of you, it’s best to save that to bring in the big bucks!

No, your lead magnet eBook should be short, sweet, and to the point. In fact, it’s best to follow the K.I.S.S (Keep it Simple Sweetie) system when creating any kind of lead magnet!

Examples of eBook lead magnets include:

  1. Wardrobe Rehab Book
  2. Whole 30 Weekend Jumpstart
  3. Linked In To Clients in a Weekend
  4. Quickstart Guide to Pinterest

Checklist

Checklists are a quick, detailed list of steps your reader needs to take in order to accomplish a goal.

They are incredibly valuable to your reader because you have already done all the thinking for them. You have taken the time to think out the details of a task and laid them out in a simple to follow format!

Calendar or Challenge

Challenges are like checklists but they give readers actionable steps to take each day towards a goal. Again, you are taking the guess work out of each task and making it easy for your reader to accomplish a specific goal.

They are incredibly popular and can be formatted in calendar form, daily emails, checklists, video tutorials, etc.

Discount

Discounts are stronger leads since it puts the reader in the mood to buy with their awesome discount! Just make sure to make it worthwhile for the reader.

Your reader will be more than willing to trade their email address for a good discount on your valuable products! They came to your site for a reason, now you are giving them a reason to make a purchase!

Quiz

Quizzes are becoming more and more popular. They give the reader the opportunity to learn about themselves.

For example: If you have ever taken the Myers Briggs Personality Quiz, think about why you took it? You wanted to learn more about yourself, how you perceive the world, and how you make decisions, right?

Think of how you could create a quiz to unlock an understanding or create that AHA! moment for your reader!

Make sure you have product recommendations that will help solve any problems they may find out during your quiz!

Examples

  • What kind of blog should I start?
  • What type of blogger are you?
  • Is your idea profitable?
  • What is your core purpose?
  • What are your eating habits?

Webinar

With a webinar, you can use the power of video to connect with your audience and answer any questions they may have about a certain topic.

Videos help you connect with your audience on a much deeper level. People will be able to hear your voice, see your face, and get a general feel for your personality.

These are especially helpful for service based entrepreneurs!

How to Offer Up Your Lead Magnet

It is important to choose a good email provider so you can start growing your very own audience! An audience that you “own” so to say.

In case you didn’t know, your following on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and all those other marketing platforms, do not belong to you. Any one of these platforms can be taken down in a moment’s notice and all those followers are gone. Unless you were smart and had a way to capture their email address!

Which all leads back to the age-old question: Why do I need a good lead magnet? Now you know, the answer to that question! To capture that audience so you can make sure you can show up in front of them no matter what!

I suggest using MailerLite to get started! This is what I use for email marketing and I find it incredibly easy to set up automations, create forms, and so much more. It’s a drag and drop format and I LOVE IT!
